Trey Lance Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Shark Bites are the latest fantasy football news & NFL updates. Draft Sharks has been in business since 1999. And when we started, redraft was the dominant form of fantasy football. Check out what we've learned about this most basic form of fantasy football along the way.

The 49ers opened the 2nd half of Sunday's game against the Seahawks with QB Trey Lance behind center. Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly has a calf injury and is questionable to return. Garoppolo was on the sideline, though, with an earpiece in. So it doesn't appear the Niners plan to try to get him back into the game -- barring injury to Lance, of course. We'll see where this goes.

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Garoppolo will have an MRI and told reporters that he hopes "it's just a couple of weeks or something."

49ers QB Trey Lance (finger) was limited in practice all week but isn't listed on the final injury report. We presume he'll be active for Sunday's opener against the Lions, although it's unclear exactly what kind of role he'll have behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance obviously isn't a Week 1 fantasy option; Garoppolo is only in play in 2-QB leagues.

49ers QB Trey Lance (finger) got in a limited practice on Wednesday. QB Jimmy Garoppolo will start this weekend's opener vs. Detroit, but it remains to be seen if Lance will be ready for a Taysom Hill-esque role behind Garoppolo.

49ers QB Trey Lance is "trending in the right direction" in his recovery from a small chip to 1 of the fingers on his right hand, GM John Lynch said Wednesday. The 'Niners are still hoping to get Lance back at practice on Monday -- although Lynch admitted that's "kind of the optimistic" timetable. This injury has likely killed any chance Lance had of winning the Week 1 starting job. But we're still expecting to see the rookie under center by the midway point of the season.

49ers QB Trey Lance has a small “chip” in his finger, per HC Kyle Shanahan. The rookie is expected to miss about 1 week. That puts him back in time for Week 1. Even if Jimmy Garoppolo starts, the preseason showed us that the Niners might give Lance a handful of snaps right away.

Niners HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters Sunday that there is no imminent plan to increase 1st-team reps or QB Trey Lance. “I don’t know,” Shanahan said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I haven’t really defined that for myself either. Just when I think it feels right, when he seems ready, when I think the team seems ready. I mean, we’ll continue to mix him in there. But I don’t plan on just doing that completely." Lance completed 5 of 14 passes in his preseason debut Saturday, including an 80-yard TD to WR Trent Sherfield on his 2nd throw. Shanahan said after the game that the rookie produced "some good and some bad" in his 1st action.

Niners GM John Lynch told ESPN's Adam Schefter Tuesday that QB Jimmy Garoppolo is "playing his best football since he's been here; it's something everyone's recognizing." The change from Garoppolo to Trey Lance -- who has been generating buzz lately -- is inevitable. But fantasy drafters should realize that Garoppolo remains the leader to open the season behind center in San Francisco.

49ers QB Trey Lance got reps with the 1st-team offense in team drills on Tuesday for the 1st time in training camp. The rookie has been out-playing QB Jimmy Garoppolo by all accounts -- and it looks like he's getting rewarded. While HC Kyle Shanahan has still said that Garoppolo is his starter, it might simply become impossible to keep Lance off the field. We'll see how preseason goes, but bet on seeing Lance under center for San Francisco early on this season, if not by Week 1. He's a high-upside fantasy pick.

According to 49ers beat writer Matt Barrows, “the notion that [Trey] Lance could overtake [Jimmy] Garoppolo early in the season, which seemed so farfetched on draft day and after OTAs, appears far more realistic today.” Lance’s aggressiveness and athleticism have stood out through 4 practices. Of course, that’s a tiny sample size. But the 20-year-old — with only 17 college starts — appears on track for early-season starts. We like Lance as a QB2 stash given his rushing ability and the weapons in San Francisco.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan declared QB Jimmy Garoppolo his starter on Tuesday. "There's no open competition right now," Shanahan said. "Jimmy is coming in as the one and Trey [Lance] is coming in as the two." Chalk this one up as typical early-camp coach speak. Garoppolo might be the favorite for the Week 1 starting job, but we imagine Lance could change that with a strong summer. And we're definitely betting on seeing the rookie under center at some point this season.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan confirmed that QB Jimmy Garoppolo is in the driver’s seat to start Week 1. "I definitely see it as Jimmy's the starter," Shanahan said via CBS. "But if Trey's ready to compete, I have no problem with it. I don't sit there and say, 'Hey, we're not playing a rookie quarterback. We have to rest him the first year.' … I don't really make any decisions like that until I actually have an opinion on it. And that'll take to how I see him in camp. If he comes in and he's playing at a high level and we think he gives us the best chance to win, we wouldn't hesitate to do that [start him Week 1]." While Garoppolo will likely start Week 1, he’ll almost certainly turn the keys over to Lance at some point in 2021.
