Bottom Line

Smith retained fantasy relevance in 2023, despite bottom-barrel QB play.

Tua Tagovailoa supplies a massive QB upgrade. But his targets are set to dip as he plays alongside Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Current projections have Smith at 54 targets, putting him outside the top-25 TEs. So he’s a fine TE3 target in best ball but not someone to count on in early-season matchups.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Smith split TE duties with Kyle Pitts in Atlanta.
  • Overcoming ugly QB play, Smith tallied 50-582-3 in 17 games.
  • He played under HC Arthur Smith, who coached him in Tennessee.
  • The former Titan finished as a top-10 fantasy TE in five separate weeks.
  • Smith, however, faded down the stretch.
    • He topped 35 yards in only one of his final eight games.
  • Overall, Smith’s underlying profile proved solid.
    • He tied a career high with 14 missed tackles forced.
    • He beat his career averages in yards after catch per reception (7.3), yards per route run (1.55), yards per catch (11.6) and catch rate (72.5%).
  • Atlanta took advantage of his versatility, utilizing him in the slot on 52.8% of his passing snaps.
    • 13.7% of such snaps were spent out wide.

What to Expect in 2024

  • Smith joins a TE depth chart that includes returning starter Durham Smythe.
    • Smythe notched only 35-366-0 in 16 games. He saw a 7.8% target share (43 total).
  • Smith signed a two-year free agent deal with nearly $4 million guaranteed. The 29 year-old projects for lead TE duties.
  • Translating that to reliable fantasy production will be tricky, though.
    • Miami returns Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. That duo accounted for a 50% target share last year.
    • They added Odell Beckham in free agency – and spent two late-round picks on WRs Malik Washington and Tahj Washington.
  • Miami’s 2023 offense wasn’t pass-heavy.
    • They ranked 12th in pass rate over expected; 22nd in raw pass rate.

Tua Tagovailoa Cleared To Play Week 8

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa has cleared concussion protocol and will start this weekend's game vs. the Cardinals, HC Mike McDaniel said Friday. Miami has totaled just 40 points without Tagovailoa over the last four games. They averaged 27.9 points per game with Tua last year and are implied for 25 points against Arizona this week. Dolphins players are back to their early-season spots in our Week 8 Rankings.

Dolphins WR Malik Washington (quad) is out for Sunday’s opener vs. the Jaguars. The rookie went from limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday to no practice on Friday. With WR Odell Beckham on the PUP list, Miami is woefully thin at WR entering Week 1. Braxton Berrios will be the No. 3 WR on Sunday. Grant DuBose is currently the only other WR on the roster besides Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. RB De’Von Achane and TE Jonnu Smith could be big parts of the passing game this weekend.

The Dolphins signed TE Jonnu Smith to a 2-year deal worth up to $10 million. Smith was inconsistent in 2023 but ultimately set career highs in catches (50) and yards (582). His run-after-catch ability will have a chance to shine alongside Tua Tagovailoa. Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Smith excelled on screens last year, notching 71 yards over expectation. That ranked third among all NFL players. At 29 (in August), Smith could push for low-end TE2 value this fall. We'll see if Miami adds additional pass-catching depth in the draft.

The Falcons released TE Jonnu Smith. The 28-year-old set career highs last year with 50 catches and 582 receiving yards. Both marks ranked top-4 on the run-heavy Falcons. Smith's 1.55 yards per route ranked 11th among 45 qualifying TEs. He's still capable of making a fantasy football impact in 2024, depending on the landing spot. Smith's departure from Atlanta obviously doesn't hurt TE Kyle Pitts' outlook.

Falcons TE Jonnu Smith hauled 5 of 6 targets for a team-high 100 receiving yards in Week 9 vs. the Vikings. Most of that production game on a 60-yard TD on a screen pass in the third quarter. Sunday was the first time he out-targeted teammate Kyle Pitts over the past four games. Pitts was fine (4 catches, 56 yards), though it’s disappointing that he didn’t see a more significant role without WR Drake London (groin) in the lineup. The duo of Smith and Pitts rank as the TE14 and 17 in PPR points per game, respectively. Both are relatively decent lineup options, though the frustrating nature of HC Arthur Smith’s offense makes them hard to count on for consistency. Their prospects won’t be any easier for the rest of the season, either. The Falcons’ remaining schedule ranks as the ninth-toughest for TEs per our adjusted fantasy points allowed.

Atlanta cut Smith in February following a nondescript 2023 (50-582-3). He signed a 2-year deal with Miami shortly thereafter, joining a club with little TE depth. Only 29, Smith could remain a spot-start fantasy option over the short term.
