Texans RB Joe Mixon has been out of practice since early last week with a hamstring issue. HC DeMeco Ryans downplayed the injury when initially speaking about it on July 23. But Mixon remained out when the team took the field Monday morning, according to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle.
Ryans on July 23: "Joe will be fine. Joe may miss a little time, but he’ll be fine. Joe is [as tough] as the toughest competitor we have, so I’m not worried about Joe. He’ll be fine. No issues there.”
We'll see whether the coach says anything different a week later.
It's early in training camp. And the team very well might just be taking it cautiously to make sure Mixon's all the way back. He has at least watched practice from the sidelines the past couple of days.
Of course, hamstring issues are always worth tracking. Seemingly minor tweaks can sometimes linger beyond when anyone thought they would. And we see plenty of hamstring re-injury.
We're not yet worried about Mixon's hamstring. But we'll certainly be watching his return closely.
RB Dameon Pierce has been the big winner. Mixon's absence leaves lots of first-team reps available, and Pierce has been leading that work.
That's not surprising, given a lackluster depth chart behind him. But the reps are especially important for a third-year player who fell last year from season-opening starter to three total touches across two playoff games.
Neither Pierce nor Mixon has budged in our RB rankings during Mixon's absence. We'll watch for any reason to alter them going forward.
Neither player has seen a significant change in best ball ADP over the past week either, according to our data from Underdog Fantasy drafts.
