Shark Bites are the latest fantasy football news & NFL updates. Draft Sharks has been in business since 1999. And when we started, redraft was the dominant form of fantasy football. Check out what we've learned about this most basic form of fantasy football along the way.
Colts QB Anthony Richardson left Week 2’s game vs. the Texans in the second quarter due to a concussion. Before leaving the contest, he completed 6 passes on 10 attempts for 56 yards and totaled 35 rushing yards with a pair of TDs on the ground. The rookie’s early performance was strong enough that fantasy managers who started Richardson can’t be too concerned about their matchups. We’ll keep an eye on how he progresses through NFL concussion protocol as this coming week unfolds. QB Gardner Minshew (19 completions on 23 attempts, 171 passing yards, 1 TD vs. the Texans) would likely be the Colts’ starter in Week 3 vs. the Ravens if Richardson cannot play.
Colts QB Anthony Richardson left in the first half of Sunday's game vs. the Texans to be checked for a concussion. Stay tuned for an update. QB Gardner Minshew is in for the Colts.
Update: Richardson has been ruled out with a concussion. We'll track his progress through the protocol this coming week.
Colts QB Anthony Richardson bruised his left knee in Sunday's loss to the Jaguars but "will be fine," according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. We'll see whether that means Richardson will be ready for a Week 2 visit to Houston. QB Gardner Minshew took over for the final few plays against Jacksonville.
Colts HC Shane Steichen announced Tuesday morning that they've named QB Anthony Richardson the regular-season starter. It's not a surprising move, but it's noteworthy that Steichen announced it after just one preseason game. Whether that signals more confidence in how far along Richardson already is or just a desire to commit to him earlier doesn't really matter. Richardson also doesn't need to be as "good" at football as most QBs to contribute fantasy value. Even with sack yardage subtracted (per college stat practice), Richardson still averaged 54.5 rushing yards per game across 12 starts in his only full season as Florida's starter. Combine that with a big arm and displayed aptitude for throwing deep, and you have a QB with immediate upside into the top 12. Check our fantasy football QB rankings to see where Richardson lands after this announcement.
Colts rookie QB Anthony Richardson has already cracked the top 12 QBs in Underdog Fantasy ADP. Drafters are obviously chasing his rushing upside, and he'll need big ground production to deliver for fantasy. There have been seven rookie-QB seasons in NFL history that would have ranked among last year's top 12 QB scores. That group had a median of 34.0 rushing yards per game (578 yards over a 17-game season) and a median of 234.8 passing yards per game. All seven of those rookie QBs averaged at least 213.3 passing yards per game. That would obviously be an easier level for Richardson to reach right away. And he's capable of smashing that 34-yard rushing benchmark. Justin Fields, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts all exceeded 50 rushing yards per game in 2022. Colts owner Jim Irsay recently reiterated that the team won't be scared to play Richardson early. The rookie doesn't sit as high in our 2023 fantasy football rankings as he does in Underdog ADP. But he certainly has the upside to deliver QB1-level production. Read more about his upside (and downside) in our Richardson profile.
Colts owner Jim Irsay hinted on Monday that his team plans to get rookie QB Anthony Richardson on the field early. "We know it’s going to be tough. But he has to play to get better," Irsay said on the Pat McAfee Show. "There’s no question. Gardner [Minshew] could play better early on, him just being a veteran. But we have to get Anthony on the field." Irsay added that HC Shane Steichen will ultimately decide when Richardson takes over as the starter. But Steichen had a similar message back in April, saying, "the development of players comes with more experience." We just bumped Richardson's projection up to 14 games played -- and that might still be conservative. His rushing ability gives him obvious QB1 upside whenever he takes the field.
Colts OC Jim Bob Cooter gave his early impressions of rookie QB Anthony Richardson. “I think he’s got a really good head on his shoulders. Kind of sees and understands what’s going on around him at a pretty high level,” Cooter said. “I’ve been really impressed with him just dealing with him in meeting rooms and different situations that we all encounter each other in. So (he) just has had a good way about him handling this stuff." Cooter believes Richardson’s experience at Florida will prepare him for life in Indianapolis. “Shoot, playing quarterback in the NFL, you’re usually going to have your ups and your downs. You’re usually going to have some criticism and some praise. I think that’s a really good trait to walk in the door with, the ability to handle what’s coming at you and have a good mindset about it, and I think Anthony’s done a nice job of that so far, at least in my eyes.” Richardson remains the favorite to start at least a majority of the games for Indy in 2023. Looking at fantasy PPG, he projects as a fringe top-15 QB.
Colts owner Jim Irsay told NFL.com's Judy Battista that QB Anthony Richardson will start games this season. It's fair to wonder how much knowledge or input Irsay actually has on this. As the team owner, he shouldn't really be involved with on-field decisions. And he certainly doesn't tend to hold back with his public comments. But QBs chosen early in Round 1 historically are likely to take over the starting job at some point in Year 1 -- most commonly before mid-season. Many evaluators think Richardson will need more development time than Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud. But there are others who believe he's much closer to ready. Indy signed QB Gardner Minshew for just $3.5 million on a one-year deal in free agency. That's light even for a backup at this point. So they clearly didn't sign Minshew intending to have him start for a year. We already have Richardson projected to start more than half his rookie season in our 2023 fantasy football QB rankings. And we'll be watching his offseason closely. His rushing ability makes the upside enormous.
The Colts selected Florida QB Anthony Richardson with the fourth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Richardson tested as the most athletic QB in NFL Combine history. A 4.43 forty-time, a 40.5-inch vertical, and a 129-inch broad jump are simply incredible. At 6’4, and 244 pounds, Richardson’s dynamic speed/power combo showed up at Florida. The 21-year-old tallied 654 rushing yards and 9 TDs in his one season as a starter. Inexperience is part of the problem here. But Richardson needs to kick durability concerns after suffering knee, ankle, and hamstring injuries in college. He also needs to show more down-to-down consistency — especially in the short to intermediate ranges. Ultimately, we see the 21-year-old improving over time. With elite rushing ability and plenty of arm talent, Richardson has the high-upside profile you should chase in rookie drafts. Landing on the Colts also turns up a nice schematic fit with HC Shane Steichen, who helped develop Jalen Hurts. Indy added Gardner Minshew this offseason, so the Colts don’t have to rush Richardson on the field. Current projections have the rookie for 11 games.
The Colts signed QB Gardner Minshew to a 1-year, $3.5 million deal. It's backup money, which is what Minshew figures to be for at least most of 2023 behind whichever QB the Colts nab in next month's draft. It's worth noting that Minshew spent the past 2 seasons in Philadelphia with new Colts HC Shane Steichen, so he'll be familiar with the offense.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (right shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion all week and is officially questionable for Week 18 vs. the Giants. The Eagles could secure the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs with a win on Sunday. The sense of urgency to win might be enough to see Hurts back under center for the first time since Week 15. Hurts ranks 3rd among QBs in rushing yards per game (54.9), and last he played the Giants in Week 14, he posted 30.4 points. We consider him a top-5 QB in Week 18 if he gets the green light.
Eagles HC Nick Sirianni said Friday morning that QB Jalen Hurts is "trending in the right direction" for playing Sunday against the Giants. Don't be surprised if he carries a "questionable" tag on the final practice report. We'll certainly be watching Hurts' status right up until his game's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. Let's hope fantasy football managers get clarity before then, though.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (right shoulder) was limited in practice again on Thursday. It's still unclear at this point if he'll be named the starter for Week 18 vs. the Giants. Friday's injury report will give us a better idea of what to expect. We'll let you know how this shakes out tomorrow.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (right shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion on Wednesday. Hopefully, the superstar will be able to suit up in Week 18 vs. the Giants. Hurts has not played since injuring his shoulder in Week 15 vs. the Bears. We'll be sure to keep up with this storyline as the week unfolds. Check back tomorrow for an update.
Eagles QB Gardner Minshew completed 18 of 32 pass attempts for 276 yards with 1 TD and INT apiece vs. the Saints. Fantasy managers hoping to stream Minshew in the absence of QB Jalen Hurts (right shoulder) on Sunday are assuredly disappointed by the end result. The Saints dominated time of possession early, holding Minshew and company to 7:10 seconds of offense in the 1st half. The Eagles never really found their groove until late in the game and only converted 3 of 12 3rd downs in Week 17. It remains to be seen if Hurts will work his way back into the lineup for Week 18 vs. the Giants next Sunday.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (right shoulder) is inactive for today’s game vs. the Saints. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this morning that Hurts is expected to be available for Week 18, although whether and how much he plays in that one will depend on whether the Eagles lock up the NFC’s #1 seed with a win today. QB Gardner Minshew gets another start.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (right shoulder) is officially listed as doubtful for Week 17 vs. the Saints. Looks like fantasy managers are going to get another taste of backup QB Gardner Minshew on Sunday. Minshew had a strong top-12 fantasy outing against the Cowboys last week and should be able to continue with similar success this weekend. Consider Minshew a low-end QB1 in a neutral matchup vs. the Saints.
Eagles QB (right shoulder) managed to practice in a limited fashion on Thursday. This marks the 1st time Hurts has practiced since sustaining his shoulder injury in Week 15 vs. the Bears. It's still unclear whether he will be able to suit up vs. the Saints in Week 17. There's still a strong possibility we'll see QB Gardner Minshew again. Check back tomorrow as we learn more.
ESPN's Dan Graziano writes that he'd be "surprised" if Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (shoulder) played against the Saints this weekend. "The impression I get from talking to people about this situation is that the Eagles believe they will have Hurts back before their first playoff game, but they still aren't sure about the extent to which the injury will affect him once he does return," Graziano adds. We'll get Philadelphia's first practice report of the week this afternoon. QB Gardner Minshew certainly played well enough in last week's loss to the Cowboys to instill confidence in the Eagles.
Eagles QB Gardner Minshew racked up 355 yards and 2 TDs in Saturday's loss at Dallas. Both of his TDs went to WR DeVonta Smith, who led the team with 12 targets, 8 catches and 113 yards. WR A.J. Brown added 6-103 receiving on 8 targets. RB Kenneth Gainwell (4-41) and TE Dallas Goedert (3-67) were the other Eagles with multiple catches. Minshew will be worth a look for Week 17 fantasy football lineups in a neutral scoring matchup with the Saints, if QB Jalen Hurts (shoulder) remains out.
