Shark Bites are the latest fantasy football news & NFL updates. Draft Sharks has been in business since 1999. And when we started, redraft was the dominant form of fantasy football. Check out what we've learned about this most basic form of fantasy football along the way.
Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence has a sprained right ankle and will undergo additional testing on Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Lawrence was in a walking boot after the loss to the Bengals but was able to stand at his locker, per NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. We should get an update on Lawrence's injury and timeline for return later today. QB C.J. Beathard played pretty well in relief of Lawrence on Monday, completing nine of 10 passes for 63 yards. Still, Lawrence's absence would be a significant downgrade for all of Jacksonville's skill-position players.
Jaguars TE Evan Engram finally found the end zone in Week 13, finishing Monday night’s game vs. the Bengals with a team-high 9 catches on as many targets for 82 receiving yards. His 23.2 PPR points in the contest rank second among all TEs in Week 13 and stand as Engram’s highest mark of the season. As disappointing as it was to see QB Trevor Lawrence leave with a late ankle injury, fantasy managers should keep in mind that a healthy portion of Engram’s production (4 catches and 31 yards) came on Jacksonville’s final two drives with backup C.J. Beathard under center. Engram will likely remain among our top 12 weekly TEs even if Lawrence misses time.
Jaguars WR Zay Jones (knee) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the 49ers. He got in three limited practices this week, so Jones should have a shot to return for Week 11. But WR Christian Kirk, WR Calvin Ridley, and TE Evan Engram should continue to dominate targets this weekend.
Jaguars TE Evan Engram caught all 10 of his targets for a team-high 88 yards in Sunday's win at Pittsburgh. That pushes his season catch rate to 83.6%, nearly 10 percentage points higher than last season. That 74.5% in Engram's first year with the Jaguars set a career high. His 8.5 yards per reception, though, marks a career low -- 2.0 short of last year's mark. Matchups with San Francisco and Tennessee after the Week 9 bye favor passing, which can obviously only help Engram.
Jaguars WR Zay Jones (knee) remained sidelined in practice all week and is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Steelers. WR Christian Kirk, WR Calvin Ridley, and TE Evan Engram should again be Jacksonville’s top three targets in that one.
ESPN's Adam Schefter calls Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence "uncertain" for Thursday night's game vs. the Saints with his knee sprain. Lawrence's injury “is not a significant thing," a source tells Schefter. But the short turnaround comes at a bad time. We'll keep you updated on Lawrence's status over the next few days. QB C.J. Beathard is Jacksonville's backup.
Jaguars TE Evan Engram snagged all 7 targets in Sunday's lopsided win over the Colts. He turned that into just 41 yards, though, with nearly half of that coming on a single 19-yard reception. Engram easily led Jacksonville in receptions, with just one teammate catching more than three. It was Engram's third game of 7 receptions among the past four. Engram also has yet to average 10 yards per catch or score a TD in a game, though. That makes him a high-floor, low-ceiling fantasy producer.
Jaguars WR Zay Jones (knee) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Colts. WR Calvin Ridley, WR Christian Kirk, and TE Evan Engram should continue to control Jacksonville targets this weekend.
Jaguars WR Christian Kirk led the team in receiving in Week 4 vs. the Falcons, hauling in 8 of 12 targets for 84 yards. Teammate Calvin Ridley saw limited involvement with 2 targets, though he found the end zone on busted coverage in the first quarter. TE Evan Engram also had a solid outing, corralling 7 of 8 targets for 59 yards. The Jaguars’ offense started to show some signs of improvement in London. We’ll see if they can keep their success going stateside when they return to face the Bills in Week 5.
Jaguars WR Zay Jones (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday morning's game vs. the Falcons. He's yet to practice since hurting that knee in Week 2. His absence leaves a handful of targets to go around for WR Calvin Ridley, WR Christian Kirk, and TE Evan Engram.
Jaguars TE Evan Engram hauled in 7 of 8 targets for a team-leading 67 receiving yards in Sunday’s loss vs. the Texans. Teammate WR Christian Kirk struggled for much of the contest before finding the end zone on a 26-yard dart. Perhaps the biggest concern from Week 3 is WR Calvin Ridley. The veteran only roped in 3 of 7 targets for 40 yards and dropped two passes in the end zone. This is the second week in a row that Ridley and QB Trevor Lawrence failed to get on the same page, despite abundant efforts. We’re starting to get a little nervous about this offense headed toward Week 4 vs. the Falcons.
Jaguars HC Doug Pederson is turning over play-calling duties to OC Press Taylor, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "I totally trust Press," Pederson told NFL.com. "We think alike. We've been together for a long time, and he's around Trevor [Lawrence] all the time and knows what Trevor likes." We'd prefer Pederson continue calling plays considering Jacksonville's success last year. But we're ultimately not expecting a significant fantasy impact here. Taylor has worked under Pederson for six NFL seasons.
Jaguars beat writer John Shipley believes TE Evan Engram has performed better in training camp this year than he did in 2022. Engram, of course, broke out with 73-766-4 in his Jags debut. Calvin Ridley’s arrival takes some shine off Engram’s fantasy appeal. Still, the 29-year-old profiles as a top-12 option.
The Jaguars have agreed to a three-year deal with TE Evan Engram, ahead of Monday's deadline to extend franchise-tagged players. Engram will get $41.25 million total, with $24 million of that guaranteed, according to NFL.com. Jacksonville extended Engram after he finished among the top 6 TEs across fantasy formats in his first season there. Engram sits low in TE1 territory in our 2023 TE rankings.
Jaguars TE Evan Engram enjoyed a big rebound season in 2022, both in real football and fantasy. That included finishing fifth among TEs in PPR points, fifth in targets, fourth in receptions and yards, and tied for 11th in TDs. Engram's eight top-12 weekly finishes also tied him for sixth at the position. But his weekly lows dipped pretty low. Engram's median weekly PPR finish for the year was TE16. That tied Gerald Everett for just 13th. Jacksonville returns WRs Christian Kirk and Zay Jones, each of whom earned higher Pro Football Focus receiving grades than Engram for the season. WR Calvin Ridley adds a new challenge for targets, and he arrives as arguably the biggest receiving talent on the team. Engram deserves top-12 consideration among TEs in fantasy drafts this year. But his TE8-9 ADP so far puts him a little higher than his spot in our TE rankings. You can mix him in if you're drafting a lot of teams, especially in best ball lineups that include QB Trevor Lawrence. But Engram hasn't been a target player for us in early drafting. Read more specifics about Engram's outlook on his player page.
The Jaguars selected Penn State TE Brenton Strange in Round 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft. At 6’4, 253 pounds, Strange posted 32-362-5 (13 games) as a senior. He tested as an impressive athlete, with a Relative Athletic Score of 9.06 (out of 10). Strange will spend 2023 behind Evan Engram, who’s set to play on the franchise tag. But there’s starting opportunity as soon as 2024.
Raiders RB Josh Jacobs won't report for the start of the team's voluntary offseason program on Monday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports. Jacobs has yet to sign his franchise tender, ultimately hoping for a longer-term deal. He's unlikely to get it, but at this point we don't expect a holdout into the summer. We'll keep an eye on the situation. Giants RB Saquon Barkley and Jaguars TE Evan Engram are also skipping voluntary workouts after getting franchise-tagged earlier this offseason.
The NFL announced Monday that it has reinstated Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley. The 28-year-old hasn't played since Week 7 of 2021. Ridley initially left the team for personal reasons. The league then suspended him for all of 2022 after revealing that Ridley had placed football bets while he was away from the Falcons. Jacksonville acquired the wideout last November for a fifth-round 2023 NFL Draft pick and a conditional fourth-rounder for 2024. (That can become a third- or second-round pick.) The Jaguars now add Ridley to an offense that got quality fantasy football output from WR Christian Kirk, WR Zay Jones, and TE Evan Engram in 2022. Projecting the 2023 target shares will be a challenge, but each remains an upside player. Ridley's best ball ADP has been all over the place this early draft season. He has climbed as high as WR16 in Underdog drafts and currently sits 20th there, four WR spots ahead of Kirk. FFPC drafters, meanwhile, have Ridley 29th among WRs -- two spots behind Kirk. The two also sit close together on other draft sites. Keep the ADP variations in mind as you decide both whether and where to draft each Jaguars wideout. The collective talent can only help QB Trevor Lawrence, who's going eighth at the position in FFPC drafts right now.
