Jalen Hurts Delivers Passing Numbers, But Issues Remain

What They're Saying

WR DeVonta Smith after the game: "We have to be on the same page on certain things. There's times where we're looking at [Hurts] and he may give a signal before or after we look, and ultimately we have to be on the same page. We have to see that signal no matter what. ... It was just little things within the routes. He may have seen something presnap and sometimes we didn't see it."

Hurts: "I can’t tell you what the issue is. Ultimately, I can take accountability for everything and take responsibility for it all. The lack of execution and maybe lack of sense of urgency in how our operation is. And so I take the responsibility for all of it because I’m just trying to find solutions for it. Just trying to grow and learn from it and I look at this as an opportunity in itself. You play the game to win and when you don’t, you learn from it."

To summarize:

• DeVonta Smith finished a strong game (8-114 on 10 targets) against a good Broncos secondary.
• He said the WRs haven't been on the same page with the QB at all times so far.
• Hurts said he didn't realize they weren't on the same page.

The Eagles clearly focused on trying to fix the passing game against Denver, but they also seemed to over-treat the problem -- especially considering the game conditions.

Philly dropped back on all three plays of the first possession and seven of 11 plays on the second drive. At halftime, Hurts had 22 dropbacks vs. just nine Eagles rushes. And even after Philadelphia took a 17-3 lead early in the third quarter, the next (failed) possession dropped Hurts back on all five plays.

Saquon Barkley logged one carry in the second half of a game his team led by two scores.

Even Hurts completed a season-low 60.5% of his passes, took six sacks, and scrambled only once.

Does This Change Anything for Hurts?

Nah. Even with his offense struggling overall and just two games of more than 152 passing yards, Hurts sits sixth among QBs in fantasy points per game (depending on your scoring format).

The Eagles QB should remain in your lineup, especially for two matchups with the Giants over the next three weeks.

But we'll certainly be watching for the next step in "fixing" this disjointed offense.
